The central government has asked Chandigarh for a progress report on steps taken for the promotion of electric vehicles and EV policy. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has already decreased the power tariffs for EV charging stations.

The Chandigarh administration is working on its first EV policy and on guidelines for setting up EV charging stations. The Union Territory officials had allotted tenders to a private firm for 40 electric buses and last year, the first batch of electric buses was launched.

Under the FAME Scheme, the Ministry of heavy industries and public enterprises has been working to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. Under the FAME Scheme Phase II, 80 electric buses were sanctioned for Chandigarh.

In India, Chandigarh has the highest number of vehicles with nearly 12 lakh vehicles that are registered. The air quality has seen deteriorated due to the rising number of vehicles and on average, there are 2 vehicles per house in the city.

Currently, 3000 electric rickshaws ply in Chandigarh. The ministry has proposed initiatives like issuing green registration number plates and waiving parking and toll charges.
