The Delhi government has suggested mandating 25% of new registrations of cabs to be electric. This would include food delivery applications like Zomato and Swiggy and cab operations like Uber and Ola.
The government has asked for comments from stakeholders on this proposal. This draft also suggests having half of all new registrations for ride-sharing and deliveries (two and three-wheelers) be electric, just within a year of registration.
In Delhi, the transport sector pollutes the most according to a report. Cabs are one of the main polluting sources in the city and each cab travel around 145,000 km (90,000 miles) every year on average.
The proposal if approved can benefit on health and finances of the public health system which is badly affected by pollution. This move can also decrease the demand for fossil fuels in the city. It also includes imposing penalties if the company does not comply with the transition targets.
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to deploy 1500 electric buses according to Kailash Gahlot, Transport Minister of Delhi. This will make Delhi the first state to have electric buses on a large scale.
TCIL, a Mini Ratna Category-1 Status Company under the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, with support of SDMC launched the first e-vehicle charging station in the South Delhi area.
