The Delhi government starts the scrapping of its old diesel and petrol vehicles and acquiring electric vehicles in order to fight pollution.
Recently, the General Administration Department (GAD) has procured around 12 electric vehicles (EVs) which will be used by top officers and Ministers of the Delhi government.
“We have also started the process to identify and send such vehicles that have completed their lifespan for scrapping,” said a senior GAD officer.
The Delhi government will deregister all the petrol vehicles which have completed 15 years and diesel vehicles which has completed 10 years in compliance with the NGT order.
“It is being done on a case-to-case basis keeping in mind the relatively higher prices of electric vehicles as compared to conventional vehicles,” said a senior Delhi government official.
In February 2021, the government directed all autonomous bodies and their departments to purchase only electric vehicles for their commute.
“All departments of the Delhi government will now use only electric vehicles. Over 2,000 petrol and diesel vehicles will be replaced with electric vehicles,” Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said.
“While these vehicles will be scrapped, their VIP registration numbers will be retained for registration of new vehicles to be procured by the department,” the officer said.
