Fleely Energy plans to expand its charging services to include Direct Charging (DC) facilities for three-wheelers in the nation by 2023.
Three wheelers are an essential part of the Indian economy due to the dual utility of passenger and logistics services. There are many electric three wheeler models and brands that have been recently launched, such as the Piaggio Motors, Euler Motors, Altigreen, Atul Autos, and Mahindra Treo. Especially after the impact of the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain transportation has been crucial for companies nationwide. Electric three wheelers are poised for huge growth in the upcoming financial year with a CAGR of 9%, which is on par with the GDP. However, there are still lingering issues that prevent the sector from achieving its total potential.
Up till very recently in India, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards, alternating current, or AC charging was regarded as the official charging mechanism for electric three-wheelers in India. The problem with AC charging is that slow charging, which is the most common type of AC charging used takes around 5-8 hours for a full charge. Moreover, the charging connectors that are used are called the GB/T standard, which is a Chinese standard. Procuring the charging connectors may be difficult, as the political relations between the countries stay dicey.
There is also another variation of AC charging called fast charging. This also predominantly uses the Chinese GB/T charger. This is what was used in electric four-wheelers in India before the introduction of the DC Combined Charging System which uses Type 2 charging connectors made in Europe and North America. The fast charging AC chargers take around 2-4 hours for a full charge. Both of these AC options are not time-efficient for electric three-wheeler owners in India.
Direct Charging is also known as rapid charging takes anywhere between 20 minutes to an hour for a full charge. This system utilizes the Combined Charging System which uses the European/North American Type 2 charger.
DC charging is becoming widely popular with the new four-wheeler models being introduced in India today. However, the three wheeler sector still has not been explored due to cost issues of charging providers and the lack of three-wheelers that can support DC charging due to the lack of availability of DC chargers. This is where Fleely Energy will step in and provide DC charging facilities nationwide to attract three-wheelers. WIth new subsidies and grants being announced by the central and state governments, the overall cost of maintaining and operating should go down.
Fleely Energy hopes that by 2023, there will be enough DC charging centers operating in India, that no three-wheeler has to use AC charging which will provide a significant time disadvantage. Fleely Energy already has a vision of its charging coverage racing nationwide for four-wheelers and will look to bolster three-wheeler coverage as well.
