The U.S. Department of Transportation released initial guidance for its $5 billion funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to deploy 500,000 electric vehicles (EV) charging stations over the next five years. The guidance establishes initial standards for charging stations funded by the government, and it is expected that the Department will release more detailed standards in May. The initial standards specify that chargers “must achieve a high level of reliability”, which it defines as achieving greater than 97 percent uptime “at the individual station level”.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging network FLO and charging station maintenance and analytics company ChargerHelp! applaud the incorporation of reliability standards in funding guidance as a major victory for EV drivers, because it is expected that widely available, reliable charging stations will convince more Americans to choose cleaner EVs as their vehicle of choice. FLO and ChargerHelp! expect that high-reliability standards will improve driver experience by reducing the risk that drivers get stranded when public chargers break. Furthermore, both companies believe reliability requirements will support accountability in the use of public funds for EV charging by setting clear minimum performance standards for funding recipients that are aligned with the interests of both EV drivers and funders.

Quotes from FLO and ChargerHelp!
“After more than a decade in this industry, we know that the best way to get maximum value for program funders is to set minimum performance standards for station reliability. This is a major statement from the Federal Government on the importance of reliability in EV charging that we expect to have a positive ripple effect on other publicly funded state and utility programs across the United States and the world.” – Louis Tremblay, President and CEO, FLO.

“We applaud the efforts of the Biden Administration and Secretary Buttigieg to put consumers first.  Drivers want to know that they can rely on public EV charging stations. I hope the uptime metric means that more people will give thought to the funding needed and will signal to companies that the time is now to invest in the means necessary to meet the 97% standard if they haven’t already done so.” – Kameale Terry, CEO and Co-Founder, ChargerHelp!
